CPS seeks waiver from IHSA

If teachers go on strike, Chicago Public Schools officials want the games to continue. CPS announced on Thursday that the state's largest school district has asked the Illinois High School Association to waive its rule prohibiting sports teams from practicing and playing during a strike.

CPS announced on Thursday that the state's largest school district has asked the Illinois High School Association to waive its rule prohibiting sports teams from practicing and playing during a strike.
 
"As you know, this is an important activity that keeps our children engaged, while also lending to their academic success," CPS officials wrote. "In the event of a [Chicago Teachers Union] strike, we must do everything possible to put our students first and avoid any further disruption to their lives."
 
The earliest a strike could be called is Sept. 10, which would be after the third week of the prep football season. Teams can clinch an IHSA playoff berth with six wins in the nine-week regular season, and some teams will get in with five victories.
 
The strike could also affect CPS athletes in boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, boys soccer, boys 16-inch softball, girls swimming and diving, girls tennis and girls volleyball. There is no IHSA state series for 16-inch softball and all teams in the other sports are eligible for the IHSA playoffs, making the IHSA's decision especially important for football teams' playoff hopes.
