Waukegan parlayed a tremendous defensive effort and an 82-yard, 17-play scoring drive in the second half into a 6-3 victory over host Antioch on Friday in a non-conference prep football game.

The Bulldogs (1-1) will host Niles North next Saturday, while Antioch (1-1) will play at Vernon Hills on Friday.

Melvin Bobo scored on a two-yard keeper with 8:07 left in the game to erase Antioch’s 3-0 lead.

The drive chewed up 10 minutes 23 seconds of clock, and the key play was a fourth-and-4 pass completion from Bobo to Jaleel Darr-Duffie for eight yards that put the ball on the Antioch 34.

Antioch had one chance to tie, but a 40-yard field goal that fell short.

“I like the way the kids responded after last week,” said Waukegan coach Nick Browder of a disappointing loss to North Chicago. “They seem to believe in what we were telling them. They saw the mistakes they made last week on field and worked hard to correct them.”

The coached beamed when talking about his defense which allowed just one play of more than 10 yards.

“The defensive effort was tremendous,” he said. “Antioch has a couple of good offensive players, but our guys were in position to make plays. I’m really proud of them.”

The first half was a titanic defensive struggle.

Neither team completed a pass and Waukegan totaled 44 yards of offense while Antioch had 90.

The Sequoits got the only points of the first half when Wes Zegan drilled a 25-yard field goal with 16 seconds left before halftime.
