Scoring early — and often — Lake Zurich thrilled a raucous home crowd with a 49-0 mauling of Mundelein Friday night.
The Bears never let up in the first half, opening a 28-0 lead after one quarter and increasing the advantage to 35-0 at the break. A running clock provided the only mercy for the Mustangs after LZ running back Tyler Lindvall scored from 3 yards out with 4:58 left in the third for a 42-0 bulge.
Two minutes later, Lake Zurich’s Jackson Tiedmann scooped up a Mundelein fumble and scooted 36 yards to complete the scoring.
“Our boys played well,” said LZ coach David Proffitt, whose squad improved to 2-1. “They played hard and they played well. We have to continue to do that if we’re going to play at the end of October (in the postseason).”
Mundelein simply had no answer for the Bears’ triple-option attack on offense, and none as well for LZ’s relentless pursuit on defense when the Mustangs had the ball.
“We were coming off a (Week 2) loss, so we wanted to go back to fundamentals and get back on the winning track,” said Bears running back/defensive back Sean Lynch, who intercepted a Gavin Graves pass with his team up 14-0 in the first quarter, setting up a 35-yard touchdown run by Joey Holtz on the next play from scrimmage.
Lynch also scored on a 53-yard TD romp with 5:53 left in the third quarter to provide the halftime margin.
Mark Lacsam scored LZ’s first TD, bolting eight yards to the end zone after Bears DB Sam Walstrum picked off Graves on Mundelein’s second offensive play of the game. LZ RB Connor Schrader added a 10-yard TD gallop for the final TD of the explosive first quarter, and linebacker Colton Moskal also scored early on, picking up a Mustangs fumble and rumbling in from 20 yards away for a 14-0 lead.
Mundelein fell to 0-3 under first-year coach George Kaider.
