During an offseason spent growing accustomed to a new spread offense, Barrington quarterback Daniel Kubiuk and the team’s offensive players dreamed of sequences like the first half of the Broncos’ 40-10 win over Buffalo Grove on Friday.
Kubiuk identified a blown coverage and threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Mitch Pfieffer on Barrington’s first offensive play Friday. The Broncos carried the momentum from Pfieffer’s long touchdown through the rest of the half, compiling 363 yards of offense and seizing a 33-3 lead before the break.
“We came off firing on that play and were lucky enough to get a touchdown,” Kubiuk said of his 75-yard pass to Pfieffer. “I think it was a big momentum shift for us, offensively. And that carried over to the defense. They got a quick stop, we got the ball back and we scored again.”
Running back Justin Dragosz (19 rushes, 118 yards) scored the second touchdown of the game for the Broncos (2-2) with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter. Both Dragosz and Pfieffer scored two touchdowns in the game. Kubiuk (12-for-17, 245 yards) also threw touchdown passes to junior tight end Ryan Cowdrey and sophomore wide receiver Matt Moran.
Buffalo Grove (1-3) constantly struggled to keep pace with the high-powered Broncos in the first half, but Mike DiMatteo’s squad played better in the third and fourth quarters.
“We didn’t make any adjustments in the second half,” DiMatteo said. “What we did was play a (heck) of a lot harder. We stayed with our scheme. That’s because we didn’t come out and play. I’m very proud of the fact that our guys will fight. They just need to learn how to start fighting instead of getting on their back and fighting off their back.”
Junior Scott Smithern led Buffalo Grove with 109 yards rushing on 23 carries.
