Joliet Central's Carlos Curry (1) looks to hand the ball off against Lockport. | Larry Kane~For Sun-Times Media
During Joliet Central’s 22-14 loss Saturday to Lockport, senior quarterback Carlos Curry suffered an apparent concussion in the second half and yielded to junior running back/receiver Landriel Hart in for the Steelmen’s final two possessions.
It was obvious to first-year coach Brett Boyter that something was seriously askew with his signal caller.
“He’s called the wrong play before, and I have, too,” Boyter said. “But when he’s out there, he knows what we’re running. He doesn’t not do what he has been coached to do. When that happened, I knew something wasn’t right.”
Joliet Central also lost junior linebacker Diontay Brown to a broken hand in the same game.
“If Diontay can cast it and play, he will,” said Boyter, whose team is at Joliet West on Saturday. “He never stops playing hard, and he’s been rock-solid for us.”
After Lockport 270-pound defensive tackle Kegan Anspach showed his fancy footwork while rumbling 23 yards to the end zone with a fumble recovery against Joliet Central, it was suggested the Porters may want to install a jumbo package with Anspach at fullback.
“Yeah, I can be like the ‘Fridge’ (William Perry),” Anspach said with a laugh. “My dad always talks about the ‘Fridge’ being in the Bears backfield.”
A big oops
Plainfield South came up short against Oswego East 32-27, largely because of 10 penalties in the second half and four lost fumbles in the game. To try to compensate for the miscues, the Cougars mounted a length-of-the-field drive in the final minute, nearly pulling out the victory before time ran out.
