Western Springs, 09/21/12--Hinsdale Central's Chase Hamilton comes back for a pass as Lyons Township's Jimmy Heim and Kevin Palmer outrun the throw. Lyons Township High School hosted Hinsdale Central High School in football Friday night. | Jon Langham~for

The best night of Tom Fiedler’s career included his first touchdown pass and another for a 79-yard score. The only thing the evening didn’t include was a victory.

The sophomore quarterback for Lyons became an emergency starter this week when starter Zachary Mahoney was ruled out after injuring his left non-throwing shoulder in last week’s win over Downers Grove North. Fiedler’s starting debut was a memorable one, completing 14-of-25 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns, but No. 11 Hinsdale Central rallied for a 24-20 West Suburban Silver victory at Lyons.

Lyons (2-3, 1-2) scored two touchdowns in the first half, but could not find the end zone in the second half. Jake Elliott’s second field goal, a 39-yarder, accounted for Lyons’ only second half points early in the fourth quarter.

Hinsdale Central (4-1, 2-1) took a four-point lead that it would not relinquish on Brian Owens’ second TD pass of the game, a four-yard strike to Ricky Beuke with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter. The Devils turned to their usual workhorse, senior running back Jack Adams (25 carries, 103 yards), in the second half when star receiver Ian Bunting could not return from a sprained right ankle in the first quarter. Bunting caught one pass for 24 yards during the opening drive.

“(Adams) played a gutsy game,” Devils coach Rich Tarka said. “After they started off scoring, it was a matter of keeping to our plan. We had confidence we could run out the clock.”

Fiedler (14-for-25, 285 yards, two TDs) led Lyons to a score in his first drive by completing a seven-yard TD pass to Matt Mrazek. He stunned the Devils defense with a 79-yard TD pass to Jemari Burks (four catches, 152 yards) with 47.2 seconds before the half. That touchdown came two plays after Adams scored on a four-yard run.

“It was pretty exciting, leading off the game with a TD,” Fiedler said. “That definitely got the team going. I was in suspense for a second. I didn’t know if I was dreaming or not.”

Fiedler played the previous four weeks on the sophomore team and appeared in only one previous varsity game, against Leyden in last year’s regular season finale.

Lyons played without three impact starters on offense: Mahoney, Northwestern-bound WR/DB Matthew Harris and RB/LB Victor Conforti. Mahoney and Harris are expected to return in Week 6 at Oak Park-River Forest, but Conforti might be out for the season with a broken hand suffered in practice.
