Minooka’s Corbett Oughton is known as a pretty good wrestler.

He’s coming into his own as a defensive back as well.

A week after coming up with three interceptions, the senior picked off two passes, returning one for a 45-yard touchdown during the Indians’ 29-6 Southwest Prairie Conference win Friday night over Plainfield East.

After dropping its first three games of the season, Minooka (2-3, 2-1) has won two straight. Plainfield East dropped to 1-4, 1-2.

“Defensively, I thought we played very well,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “I thought the kids played well, overall. The kids are playing with confidence and we’re not doing anything different than we did in weeks one and two.”

A 9-yard touchdown run by Max Brozovich and a 32-yard field goal by Jacob Stytz gave the visitors a 10-0 lead. Plainfield East was nearing midfield. A pass in the flat was intercepted by Oughton and returned 45 yards for a touchdown, giving the Indians a 16-0 lead with 4:45 to play in the second quarter.

“I’m coming into my own with this defense,” Oughton said. “Everything’s clicking real well for me right now. I just hope I can keep it going.”

“He’s a senior who is making some plays for us,” Forsythe said of Oughton. “He’s playing really well right now, and that breeds confidence for the rest of our team. I don’t know why people keep throwing at him.”

Stytz’s second of three field goals, this one from 28 yards, gave the Indians a 19-0 halftime lead. A 20-yard field goal by Stytz and a 1-yard run by Cory Bee bumped the lead to 29-0 after three quarters.

Brozovich ran seven times for 70 yards and Shane Briscoe completed 5-of-10 passes for 76 yards for Minooka.

A 25-yard TD pass from East’s Jacob Kotopka to Mozel Hargrays broke the shutout.
