Lightning doesn’t usually strike twice, and for Stevenson, that was partly true on Friday night.

It struck three times.

Acting as conductor, sophomore quarterback William Bourbon provided dazzling flashes by evading defenders with his legs and moving the ball through the air as the Patriots (4-1, 2-1 North Suburban Lake) beat Warren 39-7.

Bourbon’s two touchdown strikes of more than 50 yards to 6-foot-4 receiver Alan Velev bookended the first half, coming on the Patriots’ first play from scrimmage and then again with less than two minutes left in the half.

“The defense was biting a little bit on play action,” Stevenson coach Bill McNamara said. “We were fortunate to hit some plays downfield.”

Bourbon opened up the second half breaking tackles and slicing through the middle of the field for a 46-yard touchdown scamper.

Ultimately, Warren (2-3, 1-2) didn’t have enough to keep up on Stevenson’s homecoming night. Quarterback Adam Reuss and running back Maxwell Sorby lead the way for the Warrior offense, but the Patriot defense brought consistent pressure, never giving Reuss time to unleash his strong arm.

For Stevenson, junior Matthew Morrissey added a leaping catch in the back of the end zone. Morrissey snatched the ball from the defender positioned in front of him, and effectively put the game out of reach at 33-7 in the second quarter.

“We played probably the best game we played all year,” McNamara said.
