Rain fell on a misty, murky night in Mount Prospect, and subsequently, so did Buffalo Grove.

It hardly seemed to matter that Prospect senior quarterback Devin O’Hara went without a pass completion until almost halftime Friday, as he and senior running back Stefan Isteefanos carved up the Bison defense en route to a 34-14 victory. The Knights had 136 yards on the ground in the first quarter alone.

“We were outmanned at every position, and we didn’t play well,” Buffalo Grove coach Mike DiMatteo said. “When you don’t tackle and you get pushed around, they’re going to run all over you. And that’s exactly what they did.”

Prospect cruised down the field on its first two drives, with O’Hara punching in one-yard touchdown both times to give Prospect a 13-0 lead.

The third drive looked like it was headed in the same direction until O’Hara coughed up the ball on the four-yard line after a short run. The fumble was recovered by Buffalo Grove’s Mitchell Janca.

On Buffalo Grove’s ensuing possession, senior Ryan Schumi finally broke free from the stout Prospect defensive line for a brilliant 55-yard scamper to get inside the 30-yard line. The drive would ultimately end when junior quarterback Andrew Apel’s pass on fourth and 6 fell meekly to the soggy turf.

After almost 24 minutes of nonstop running, O’Hara finally completed his first pass of the game, a short dump-off to Isteefanos that set up a 27-yard touchdown to pass to wide-open junior receiver Nikko Gountanis on Prospect’s last drive of the first half.

Midway through the third quarter, Isteefanos hammered in another 1-yard touchdown run, and junior running back Jack Tuttle put the score far out of reach at 34-0 after he scored from 6 yards out with 1:06 to play in the third.

Late touchdown runs by Apel and junior running back Scott Smithern helped Buffalo Grove (1-4) avoid the shutout.
