On a day Elgin celebrated the 50th anniversary of Memorial Field, St. Charles East used an old-fashioned approach to hand the Maroons another lopsided loss.

The Saints passed the ball only three times, forced five Elgin turnovers and enjoyed a short field all afternoon while cruising to a 58-14 Upstate Eight River victory Saturday.

Joe Hoscheit ran for three touchdowns and Erik Anderson had a pair of rushing touchdowns in his return from a shoulder injury for St. Charles East (3-2, 2-0), which scored 37 points in the first quarter. The outcome was a welcome one for the Saints, who rested their starters throughout the second half and put the memory of last week’s 34-0 loss to Neuqua Valley in the past.

“Coming off Neuqua Valley we needed to come out here strong, and I think we did that,” Hoscheit said. “It was good to see everybody get a chance today and have other guys get an opportunity to maybe make a name for themselves.”

For Elgin (0-5, 0-3), the defeat marked the program’s 13th straight loss and the fourth time this season it faced a running clock throughout the second half.

The Maroons were more shorthanded than usual as junior running back Jaylen Clemons and senior receiver Joe DeBrocke were sidelined because of what Elgin coach Dave Bierman called a school-related issue. DeBrocke is expected to return for next week’s game at East Aurora, but Clemons is off the team for the rest of the season, leaving the Maroons without their top offensive playmaker.

“The kids keep coming, they keep trying and keep getting better,” Bierman said. “That’s all we can do.”

Of St. Charles East’s 14 offensive possessions Saturday, 10 started in Elgin territory. Of those 10, seven began inside the Maroons 25-yard line.

As a result the Saints finished with only 213 total yards, but the outcome was never in doubt after St. Charles East scored two touchdowns and forced a safety to pull ahead 16-0 just over four minutes into the contest.

The Maroons did pull within 16-6 on sophomore Malik Dunner’s 68-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but that only put a temporary halt to the blowout as the Saints went on to build a 51-6 lead by halftime.

Dunner finished with 15 carries for 99 yards in his first varsity start for Elgin. The Maroons defense forced a safety in the third quarter and junior quarterback Ryan Sitter completed all five of his passes in the second half, including a 16-yard touchdown strike to Ray Dunigan.

St. Charles East quarterback Jimmy Mitchell’s two completions went for touchdowns to Anderson and Brannon Barry. Phil Hopper added a touchdown run and Anthony Sciarrino had a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown to go along with an interception for a Saints defense that had no trouble forcing turnovers.

“On defense we work on standing them up and stripping the ball,” Sciarrino said. “The coaches always say we practice how we play.”
