Middle linebackers dream about quarterback sacks and blasting a hapless running back through the line. Fenwick’s Patrick Hart lived out a different dream Saturday night with a pair of interception returns for touchdowns.

Hart’s two picks for six and two more touchdowns for running back Robert Spillane led the Friars to a 50-0 rout over visiting St. Laurence in the Catholic League White.

Fenwick (4-1, 2-0) led 35-0 at halftime and then forced a running clock in the third quarter when the defense tackled Eric Sadowski in the end zone for a safety and then reserve Mike Kozyra scored on a 13-yard touchdown run.

The Vikings (1-4, 0-2) totalled only eight rushing yards in the first half and had three first downs. Quarterback Bob Kelly completed only 3 of 21 passes and had his first attempt picked off by Hart for 45-yard interception return on the third play from scrimmage to open the game.

Hart had only one previous interception this season in the opener at Hales. Saturday night was his first game in three years with Fenwick with two interception returns for touchdowns.

“Obviously, in the middle you do not get in those positions too many times,” Hart said.

The Friars scored on their next two possessions, scoring on Spillane’s five-yard run and on Bobby Somers’ 15-yard run. Spillane, the team’s leading rusher, missed last week’s win at Bishop McNamara due to an injury.

Hart’s second interception return for a touchdown came with 2:06 to go in the second quarter.

“They ran the same play for the second one,” Hart said. “They pulled it out into the flat.”
