FRIDAY'S GAMES
AURORA CHRISTIAN (5-0, 3-0) at MARMION (1-4, 1-2)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Aurora Christian 41, St. Francis 14; Montini 30, Marmion 22.
Outlook: SCC Blue mighty mite ACS (513 enrollment classification) carries 14-game win streak into a matchup with Marmion (1,692 classification) in the second meeting ever between the two schools. The Eagles are without area receiving leader Chad Beebe (39 receptions, broken arm) but still have multiple offensive threats. The Cadets won 42-20 in 2010.
BENET (4-1, 1-1) at ST. VIATOR (3-2, 1-2)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Outlook: Finally having snapped its 10-game losing streak within the East Suburban Catholic Conference with last week’s 44-6 victory over Marian Catholic, Benet hits the road tonight hoping to get playoff eligible by securing its fifth win of the season against St. Viator. Last week, the Lions found themselves in a 14-14 tie late in the first half of their game with Notre Dame before the Dons exploded for 28 unanswered points to open up a 42-14 bulge en route to rolling to a 49-20 win. St. Viator posted a 28-0 shutout of Benet last year.
BOLINGBROOK (5-0, 3-0) at LINCOLN-WAY EAST (5-0, 3-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Outlook: Defending Class 8A champ Bolingbrook has won 12 straight since losing 20-14 to Lincoln-Way East in Week 6 last year. Illinois-bound QB Aaron Bailey and RBs Omar Stover and Jaden Huff key a supercharged offense that has scored at least 33 points every time out this season. QB Tommy Fuessel, a Northern Illinois recruit, leads the Griffins, who already have signature wins over Montini, Carmel, Homewood-Flossmoor and Sandburg.
BURLINGTON CENTRAL (4-1) AT MARENGO (1-4)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Burlington Central 26, Genoa-Kingston 14; Harvard 10, Marengo 6
Outlook: Burlington Central senior Tyler Makewski will start at quarterback in place of the injured Ryan Ritchie. Marengo is looking to end a four-game skid and trying to avoid making this its eight straight losing season.
COAL CITY (4-1, 2-1) at PLANO (4-1, 2-1)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Sandwich 14, Coal City 10; Plano 47, Herscher 28.
Outlook: The Coalers could be doing a doubletake with another tough test just off Route 34. “They return most of their players from last year and they were good last year,” said Plano coach Jim Green. “Our offense has to step it up, they haven’t been giving up many points. … our kids believe it should be a close game.” Sophomore Jack Dibble, who battled in preseason for QB job and has seen time at RB and WR, may return from injury this week for Coalers after missing Sandwich.
DEKALB (1-4, 0-1) at KANELAND (5-0, 1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: DeKalb 49, Streator 6; Kaneland 34, Rochelle 6.
Outlook: This is one where the Knights look like they should cruise, but coach Tom Fedderly will remind his troops that last year’s matchup — a Kaneland win in a 49-38 shootout — had a similar look.
ELGIN (0-5, 0-3) at EAST AURORA (0-5, 0-3)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: St. Charles East 58, Elgin 14; Neuqua Valley 48, East Aurora 0.
Outlook: Upstate Eight Conference crossover will allow one team to break a losing streak. The Maroons have lost 13 straight, the host Tomcats 35. East’s last win was a 14-0 decision over Thornwood in the sixth week of the 2008 season.
GENEVA (1-4, 1-2) at ST. CHARLES EAST (3-2, 2-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: St. Charles North 25, Geneva 6; St. Charles East 58, Elgin 14.
Outlook: Must win for the Vikings to keep playoff hopes alive. Tough call with a freshman at the helm on offense, but Bobby Hess is up to 709 yards rushing.
GLENBARD EAST (0-5, 0-3) at NAPERVILLE NORTH (2-3, 1-2)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Glenbard East lost to Wheaton North, 57-7; Naperville North won at West Chicago, 35-0
Outlook: Rebounding successfully from the punch to the gut it received the week before at WW South, Naperville North recorded a 35-0 shutout of West Chicago last week. The Huskies overwhelmed West Chicago by using the same type of formula it used in its only other win of the season: a 34-20 win at Thornton in Week 2. Not attempting a single pass against the Wildcats, the Huskies ran the ball 52 times to gain all of their 391 total yards. Since combining to score 61 points in its first two games, Glenbard East has managed only 28 points in its last three games—the closest of which was played within a 34-point margin when Naperville Central recorded a 41-7 victory in Week 3.
HAMPSHIRE (2-3) AT JOHNSBURG (0-5)
When: 7:15 p.m. Friday
Last Week: Grayslake North 54, Hampshire 22; Grayslake Central 29, Johnsburg 12
Outlook: Hampshire turned the ball over five times and yielded over 500 yards in last week's loss to Grayslake North. Johnsburg remains winless on the season, but put up a season-high 12 points in last week's contest.
JOLIET WEST (2-3, 1-2) at LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL (2-3, 1-2)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Joliet West 21, Joliet Central 3; Lincoln-Way Central 21, Lockport 0
The breakdown: Both SouthWest Suburban Blue adversairies are hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive. Joliet West will get all of its major weapons — QB Ashton McCullough, RB Jordan Brown and RB/WRs Kameron Hargove and Korey Rogers — involved offensively. Lincoln-Way Central, which lost to West 31-19 in 2011, relies on RB Kyle Waytek (627 yards, 4.5 average).
LAKE PARK (2-3) AT BARTLETT (3-2)
When: 1:30 p.m.
Last week: Batavia 33, Lake Park 29; Waubonsie Valley 19, Bartlett 0
Outlook: Lake Park senior wide receiver Kevin Teglia has 27 catches for 640 yards and 10 touchdowns and teams with senior WR Scott Filip to form a formidable duo. The Lancers have scored at least 28 points in every game this year. Bartlett is looking to turn things around after two-straight losses, including last week's shutout loss to Waubonsie Valley.
LARKIN (2-3, 1-2) at BATAVIA (5-0, 2-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Streamwood 27, Larkin 0; Batavia 33, Lake Park 29.
Outlook: Bulldog QB Micah Coffey has topped the 1,000-yard mark (1,003) passing. More importantly, he’s thrown 12 TDs with only three interceptions.
LINCOLN-WAY WEST (3-2, 2-1) at THORNTON (4-1, 3-0)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Lincoln-Way West 16, Lincoln-Way North 13; Thornton 45, Stagg 8
The breakdown: While no opponent has scored as many as 20 points against Lincoln-Way West’s stingy defense, Thornton’s offense is averaging 37.6. West is coming off a huge emotional win over Lincoln-Way North but needs this one — the first night game at Thornton since 1979 — if it is to remain in the SouthWest Suburban Red title hunt. West won last year’s meeting 19-6.
LOCKPORT (1-4, 1-2) at H-F (2-3, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Lincoln-Way Central 21, Lockport 0; Bolingbrook 45, H-F 28
The breakdown: Lockport has been having a difficult time offensively, although QB Ryan Dalton did hit 6-of-14 passes for 95 yards last week. The Porters will face a SouthWest Suburban Blue opponent in H-F that already has played Lincoln-Way East, in addition to Bolingbrook, and probably is better than its record indicates.
LOYOLA (4-1, 1-0) VS. MOUNT CARMEL (5-0, 1-0) AT GATELY STADIUM
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Loyola 42, Gordon Tech 0; Mount Carmel 56, Brother Rice 7
The breakdown: The Ramblers have a fleet of capable rushers in Colin Skinner, Ryan Ribordy, Julius Holley and Peter Pujals. Ribordy could return after sitting out Friday’s laugher. The Caravan, too, have an abundance of ground weapons. Matt Domer (45-655) and Draco Smith (38-325), along with QB Don Butkus, have made life miserable for opponents. If Butkus goes to the air, Jason Gasser (10-209) is a favorite target.
MARIST (5-0, 3-0) AT CARMEL (2-3, 2-1)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Marist 27, Joliet Catholic 23; Carmel 13, Nazareth 7
When: 7:30 p.m.
Outlook: Marist has been bending but not breaking all season, coming from 14-0 down to beat both Nazareth and Joliet Catholic. With playmakers like QB Ian Woodworth (1,239 yards, eight TDs), RB Peter Andreotti (652 yards, eight TDs) and receivers Nic Weishar (496 yards, three TDs), Flynn Nagel (265 yards, two TDs) and Bryan Polak (255 yards, TD), the RedHawks aren’t ever out of a game. Carmel is coming off its best defensive effort of the year, a 13-7 win at Nazareth. The Corsairs need that unit to keep delivering with Joliet Catholic, St. Patrick and Notre Dame still ahead.
MINOOKA (2-3, 2-1) at PLAINFIELD SOUTH (2-3, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Minooka 29, Plainfield East 6; Plainfield South 35, Romeoville 34
The breakdown: Plainfield South, which played last week without regular quarterback Ricky Luna, will need to be aware of Corbett Oughton. The Minooka senior cornerback has intercepted five passes the last two weeks and brought two of them back for touchdowns. The Indians, 23-7 winners over South in 2011, have won their last two Southwest Prairie battles and appear to have righted the ship. Max Brozovich averaged 12.1 yards on 15 carries over the last two weeks.
MORRIS (5-0, 1-0) at SYCAMORE (4-1, 1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Morris 41, Yorkville 18; Ottawa 10, Sycamore 6
The breakdown: The Northern Illinois Big 12 East is loaded with quality opponents for Morris, and the Redskins make the long trek north to meet one of them here. The Redskins’ Reese Sobol has rushed for 342 yards and is averaging 7.8 per carry while Zach Cinnamon has completed 21-of-34 passes, 61.8 percent, for 390 yards. Morris won last year’s game 43-19.
NEUQUA VALLEY (5-0, 2-0) at METEA VALLEY (1-4, 0-3)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Neuqua Valley beat East Aurora, 48-0; Metea Valley lost at South Elgin, 28-21.
Outlook: Dropping its last four games after a season-opening victory over Plainfield East, Metea Valley faces the grim situation that will require it to win out to reach the postseason for the first time in program history. That unenviable task starts tonight as the Mustangs welcome undefeated Neuqua Valley, which is off to the first 5-0 start in program history and ranked seventh in the Associated Press’ Class 8A poll, to town.
NILES WEST (5-0, 1-0) at MAINE SOUTH (5-0, 1-0)
When: 7 p.m.
Outlook: Niles West, off to its best start in decades, is one of the area’s feel-good stories. The Wolves had nine sacks in last week’s win over Waukegan, including 2.5 by DT Dennis Gargovic. No. 1 Maine South has been mostly on cruise control since a 19-13 win over Wheaton Warrenville South in Week 2, with Northwestern-bound QB Matt Alviti throwing for 1,020 yards and eight TDs with no interceptions in 124 attempts.
OSWEGO (4-1, 3-0) at PLAINFIELD EAST (1-4, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Oswego 50, Oswego East 29; Minooka 29, Plainfield East 6
The breakdown: Plainfield East will attempt to scramble the Southwest Prairie race by knocking off one of the frontrunners in Oswego, which won a 43-36 shootout over the Bengals last year. Junior RB Cullen Rompa (266 yards, 4.6 average) leads the ground attack and QB Jacob Kotopka has rushed for 221 yards and passed for 380.
PLAINFIELD CENTRAL (3-2, 1-2) at OSWEGO EAST (3-2, 1-2)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Plainfield North 28, Plainfield Central 7; Oswego 50, Oswego East 29
The breakdown: Plainfield Central is out to snap a two-game losing streak in this Southwest Prairie match-up. The Wildcats went to junior Mike Smiles at quarterback last week and he threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Brian Blair, the quarterback the first four games. Central won a 14-13 squeaker last year.
REAVIS (4-1, 1-1) AT SHEPARD (3-2, 2-0)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Reavis 40, Hillcrest 12; Shepard 36, Eisenhower 22
The breakdown: Reavis is going to have its hands full trying to contain Shepard’s skill players. Somehow, Reavis, led by QB Jose Morales (50-of-99, 799), will have to keep the chains moving and avoid turnovers. Rams coach Tim Zasada will likely have a few tricks up his sleeve. Shepard QB Jimmy McClinton (309 yards rushing; 648 passing) and WR Londell Lee (20-404) are an explosive tandem. If they’re allowed to get loose, it could be a long night for the Rams.
ROCHELLE (4-1, 0-1) at YORKVILLE (3-2, 0-1)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Kaneland 34, Rochelle 6; Morris 41, Yorkville 17.
Outlook: Playoff hungry Foxes need a bounceback performance in a game that could be a tossup.
ROMEOVILLE (0-5, 0-3) at PLAINFIELD NORTH (4-1, 3-0)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: Plainfield South 35, Romeoville 34; Plainfield North 28, Plainfield Central 7
The breakdown: Romeoville got off the deck and nearly won its first Southwest Prairie game last week, falling in overtime as senior RB Caleb Bailey and QB Jake Bambule provided some fireworks. However, the
Spartans face a major challenge as North, with senior RB Jay Roberts chewing up major chunks of yardage, have won four straight. North won last year’s match-up 42-0.
SANDWICH (4-1, 3-0) at PEOTONE (3-2, 1-2)
When: 7:15 p.m.
Last week: Sandwich 14, Coal City 10; Manteno 17, Peotone 14.
Outlook: A tough road test awaits the Indians, who control their own destiny in the conference. “We know we have a big opportunity,” said coach Dusty Behringer. “(Peotone’s) losses have been tough losses, in overtime to Plano and 17-14 vs. Manteno. They run the veer and if you’re not disciplined (on defense) you’re gonna have big problems.”
SOUTH ELGIN (3-2, 2-1) at WAUBONSIE VALLEY (5-0, 2-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: South Elgin 28, Metea Valley 21; Waubonsie Valley 19, Bartlett 0.
Outlook: Sun-Times’ No. 14 Warriors look to keep rolling on both sides of the ball, hoping to set up a showdown between unbeatens next week at North Central College against district rival and 10th-ranked Neuqua Valley.
ST. CHARLES NORTH (2-3) AT STREAMWOOD (2-3)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: St. Charles North 25, Geneva 6; Streamwood 35, St. Charles North 9
The breakdown: The North Stars defense, which has allowed only one touchdown in the past two games is looking to pick up a third straight win while Streamwood just ended a three-game losing streak last week.
ST. EDWARD (1-4) AT CHICAGO CHRISTIAN (2-3)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Chicago Christian 21, Guerin 0; Aurora Central 25, St. Edward 7
Outlook: St. Edward’s losing streak reached four with last week’s loss and is in a must-win situation against homestanding Chicago Christian. Knights quarterback Christian Bolhuis (789 yards, 9 touchdowns) leads an aerial attack that can score in bunches and put an end to St. Edward's playoff hopes if it's not defended well.
T.F. SOUTH (4-1, 2-0) AT NO. 5 LEMONT (5-0, 2-0)
When: 7 p.m.
Last week: T.F. South 22, Tinley Park 21; Lemont 17, Oak Forest 14
The breakdown: Lemont workhorse Christos Giatras (585 yards, 6.2 average) will receive the bulk of the work, but QB Zach Brosseau (30-of-57, 488 passing yards) might need to keep a fast T.F. South defensive line honest.
WALTHER LUTHERAN (1-4, 1-2) at AURORA CENTRAL (4-1, 2-1)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Wheaton Academy 56, Walther Lutheran 52; Aurora Central 25, St. Edward 7.
Outlook: The Chargers can become playoff eligible for the first time since 1997 with a homecoming win over a team that beat them 28-26 last year.
WEST AURORA (1-4, 0-3) at WHEATON NORTH (5-0, 3-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Glenbard North 28, West Aurora 14; Wheaton North 57, Glenbard East 7.
Outlook: The host Falcons are ranked seventh in the Sun-Times Super 25, have blanked two opponents and outscored their opposition 213-21. Those five foes, though, are a combined 6-19.
SATURDAY'S GAMES
CRETE-MONEE (5-0, 1-0) at BLOOM (4-1, 1-0)
When: Noon, Saturday
Last week: Crete-Monee 37, Kankakee 6; Bloom 43, Rich South 15
The breakdown: The Blazing Trojans are one of the surprise teams of the season. To pull off the upset here, they’re going to need RB Justus Brantley, who rushed for 387 yards and five touchdowns in a win Saturday over Rich South, to keep moving the chains. That would keep Crete-Monee’s offense, led by QB Marcus Terrell (76-of-107, 1,255) and WR Laquon Treadwell (23-565), on the sidelines.
Compiled by Pat Disabatoen route to the Class 8A state title. The quarterbacks are huge, with Bolingbrook’s Aaron Bailey and East’s Tom Fuessel (578 rushing yards, 358 passing) both capable runners and passers.
HIAWATHA (2-3, 2-3) at MOOSEHEART (4-1, 4-1)
When: 1 p.m., Saturday
Last week: N. Shore Country Day 39, Hiawatha 22; Ott. Marquette 35, Mooseheart 21.
Outlook: Explosive Rambler RB Oumaru Abdulahi is closing in on 1,000 yards rushing (69-917, 16 TDs).
HINSDALE SOUTH (4-1) at HINSDALE CENTRAL (4-1)
When: Noon, Saturday.
Outlook: How good is Hinsdale Central’s offense? Good enough to score more points (23) against Class 7A state favorite Glenbard West than the Hilltoppers’ other four opponents combined (21). QB Brian Owens won’t have WR Ian Bunting (ankle) this week, but does have a big, experienced line and a durable RB in Jack Adams to rely on. Hinsdale South counters with a defense that’s allowing barely 10 points a game and a quarterback, DJ Deolitsis, who’s been effective running and passing this season.
JOLIET CATHOLIC (3-2, 2-1) at ST. PATRICK (3-2, 1-1)
Kickoff: 11 a.m., Saturday at Hanson Stadium
Last week: Marist 27, Joliet Catholic 24; St. Patrick 52, Bloomington 36
The breakdown: Joliet Catholic used senior Ty Isaac as much as a receiver as a wingback last week as his injured shoulder remains at less than 100 percent. Senior quarterback Craig Slowik picked up the slack, passing for 265 yards. St. Patrick is averaging more than 28 points, the Hilltoppers a shade under 32. Hanson Stadium traditionally has been a difficult venue for East Suburban Catholic opponents.
SANDBURG (4-1, 2-1) at JOLIET CENTRAL (0-5, 0-3)
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Saturday
Last week: Lincoln-Way East 28, Sandburg 7; Joliet West 21, Joliet Central 3
The breakdown: Joliet Central continues to hang relatively close as it pursues that elusive first victory in this SouthWest Suburban Blue match-up. The Steelmen are looking for some offense to go with a defense that has been playing very well. Sandburg running back LeMonte Booker is a load.
