It wasn’t pretty, but Benet outlasted an injury-plagued St. Viator to win, 17-0, in East Suburban Catholic action on Friday night in Arlington Heights.
“Our defensive backs played great,” said Benet's Jack Crain, who had an interception. “They were hawks out there. They just flew to the ball and we picked off the ball and get good returns. They played tough the whole game but we were able to shut them down. We are fighting for our playoff life and everyone bought into it.”
Sloppy play by both teams made the first half a defensive struggle. Benet was able to break the scoreless tie when Jack Beneventi connected with Jack Tonor for 71-yard touchdown with 3:40 left in the first half to give the Redwings (5-1, 2-1) a 7-0 lead.
Beneventi finished the game 9-for-18 for a 172 yards and the one score.
“We prepared very well for this game,” said Beneventi. “I knew that everyone was going to come hard in the second half after very disappointing first half.”
The Lions (1-3, 3-3) held on but the Redwings sealed the win on Crain’s 1-yard touchdown run and John Duvic’s 18-yard field goal.
“(Crain) is a tremendous football player,” said Redwing Coach Patrick New. “When his number is called, he battles all night long. He stepped up and show why he’s the best defensive player in the conference.”
