Maine South quarterback Matt Alviti tossed four touchdown passes in a 44-20 victory Friday over Waukegan to help the Hawks improve to 8-0. The senior completed 26-of-33 passes for 283 yards. The big numbers obscured five turnovers by the Maine South offense.
“We were very sloppy offensively,” Alviti said. “But we overcame adversity. You have to keep your cool as the quarterback and be a leader out there.”
Top-ranked Maine Souths led by only 11 points when Alviti hit senior John Solari for a 6-yard touchdown pass to bump the lead to 30-12 with 4:36 left in the third quarter.
Waukegan (2-6) made the Hawks work for victory No. 8.
The Bulldogs forced a fumble and turned it into a defensive touchdown by senior Demetrious Frieson to cut the Maine South lead to 23-12. But Alviti and Co. quickly put the game away by scoring 14 points in the next eight minutes.
“Everyone is always coming after us,” Alviti said. “Waukegan was ready to play, and they came out on fire.”
