During Bolingbrook’s 40-7, Week 8 win over Lincoln-Way Central, sophomore quarterback Quincy Woods continued to show he’s capable of taking over for injured Illinois recruit Aaron Bailey.
Bailey sprained his right knee Sept. 28 against Lincoln-Way East. Since then, Woods has been the starting signal-caller.
He rose to the occasion again when he rushed for 103 yards, two touchdowns and two conversions. The Raiders got a playoff berth with the victory, which also broke a two-game losing streak.
“If it wasn’t for the offensive line we wouldn’t have won,” Woods said. “I am feeling more and more confident. Aaron helps me a lot and he’s my mentor. He teaches me things I need to learn, because I’m a young kid.”
Woods made such an impression on announcers from Bolingbrook Community Television Channel 6 that the quarterback earned a new nickname: “TD Woods.” He was referred to by his new moniker from the third quarter onward.
Bubble burst?
There are three teams left that have to win their last game in order to make the state playoffs as an at-large team.
Lincoln-Way West at 5-3, and Peotone and Seneca at 4-4 need victories this week. The IHSA website lists Joliet Catholic as a team that needs to win its game Friday at home vs. Benet, since Joliet Catholic is 5-3. The Hilltoppers do have enough playoff points to move on even if they lose.
There are three schools that are borderline in their playoff classification. Morris is between Class 4A and 5A. Providence and Plainfield North are small 7A teams but might not drop to 6A.
