With the Red Bird championship on the line, Simeon took on a formidable opponent in Lane and made it look easy with a 42-6 victory Friday at Gately Stadium.
Quarterback Elcee Burke (8-for-17, 156 yards) engineered an 11-play, 41-yard drive that was capped with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Gerrod Jenkins. Burke then gave the Simeon faithful a big scare. After throwing an interception, he was hit trying to make a tackle on the return. He missed two consecutive series, but returned to orchestrate a 16-yard, 69-yard drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Gardner with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Simeon (8-1, 5-0) scored on both of the series that Burke sat out on Jordan Jackson touchdown runs of two and one yards, respectively. The Wolverines finished the scoring with a 62-yard punt return by Darnell Cockrell and nine-yard run Timon Watkins.
Simeon coach Dante Culbreath was pleased with the outcome, but annoyed with the 105 yards of penalties that his team amassed. “You don’t want to take the fire away from your kids, but it is disturbing to be at this point in the season and still make these kinds of mistakes,” Culbreath said.
Lane finished 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference.
“Speed kills,’’ Lane coach Fred Proesel said. ‘‘They are a very well-coached team; fast and athletic. Our offense could not make enough plays to help out the defense.”
