One thing Reese Sobol expected when his Morris Redskins took on Urbana in a second-round playoff game was to win.

He and the rest of the Redskins got more than they expected in rolling to a 65-20 victory to advance to a quarterfinal matchup with Washington, Ill. next weekend.

“We came in here and expected to win,” Sobol said. “We know if our offense gets rolling we can dominate a team.”

Sobol led the way for Morris (10-1) by rushing 22 times for 321 yards and four touchdowns. The Redskins finished with 419 rushing yards.

“My hat’s off to my offensive line (Drew Aldrich, T.J. Layne, Brian Henry, Preston Miracle, Craig Claire and Danny Friend),” Sobol said. “They opened up some big holes for me today. I saw a lot of green.”

Morris’ defense overcame a slow start to limit Urbana (9-2) quarterback Cameron Mammen to less than 100 yards rushing. Mammen had 1,130 yards on the season but was held to 96 yards in 17 carries. He did account for all three Urbana scores with two touchdown runs and a touchdown pass.

“I thought our defense did great job in holding them to 20 points,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “We knew our defense would settle down. We had to figure things out. They came in with some new wrinkles we hadn’t seen but we figured them out.”

Morris squib kicked the opening kickoff and Mike McNelis recovered at the Urbana 30. Two plays later, Collin Grogan scored the first of his two touchdowns to make it 7-0. Urbana came right back and Mammen went 61 yards and the Tigers’ Kenny Patton ran in the conversion to make it 8-7 with 11:13 left in the opening quarter.

Morris never stopped scoring as the Redskins scored touchdowns on their first eight possessions. Also scoring touchdowns were Friend with a 37-yard interception return and on a 13-yard pass to close out the first half and Jake Hogan on a 36-yard pass from Zack Cinnamon.

Urbana, which picked up its first-ever playoff victory last week, was averaging 37.6 points per game and had a nine-game winning streak ended.
