Brooks' quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw runs the ball against the Austin Tigers in their playoff match at Lane Stadium on Friday, November 2, 2012, in Chicago. | Chandler West~For Sun-Times Media

Simeon and Brooks were widely considered the top two teams in the Public League this season, and they are well represented on the Sun-Times All-City team.

Six Simeon players are on the squad and a seventh narrowly missed being selected as quarterback Elcee Burke was edged out by Brooks standout Ahmad Bradshaw.

Wolverines running back Sharoid Roach, who gained over 1,000 yards on the ground and scored 15 touchdowns, is joined by tight end John Gardner, offensive lineman Devante Lee and defensive standouts Reggie Spearman, Darnell Crockwell and Kendall Moore.

Gardner’s blazing speed and tremendous catching ability helped him haul in 60 receptions for 20 touchdowns and 800 yards. Spearman, an Illinois recruit, was the Wolverines’ leading tackler, while junior corner back Crockwell snagged eight interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns.

Last season, Brooks cornerback Warren Gatewood, who is currently playing at Alcorn State, became the first position player in the school’s history to make the All-City team. Times have changed as the Eagles add five players to this year’s team. Leading the way is Bradshaw, a four-year starter who threw 27 touchdowns as a freshman and has developed into a premier signal caller who runs the 40 in 4.3 seconds, has a 4.5 GPA and threw for 24 touchdowns this season.

The Eagles’ Cleveland Clark is a 5-7, 165-pound speedster who rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. Two-way starter Josh Smith, Brooks’ leading tackler, made the team at cornerback, while Egypt Johnson checked in at linebacker.

Brooks kicker Jesus Miranda, who is a repeat selection from last year’s team, has developed into one of the top kickers in the state. Miranda missed only one kick the entire season, and converted three field goals over 40 yards for the Eagles’ high-powered offense.
Brooks coach James Brown had high praise for his players.

“They have gone through so much to get to this point,’’ Brown said before the Eagles’ Class 4A quarterfinal loss to Evergreen Park. “We are where we are right now because of the relentless way they approach the game. They also take pride in being scholar athletes.’’

Purdue-bound running back/linebacker Devon Sanders of Robeson, another All-City returnee, could have been selected on either side of the ball this season, but was voted in as part of the offense. Sanders gained 1,124 yards with 14 touchdowns. Sanders’ teammate

Derrick Jackson also made the cut. Jackson, a 6-3, 280-pound lineman scored a 25 on the ACT, ranked third in his graduating class and is being pursued by a number of Ivy League schools.

Harper’s Antoryo Barton and Orr’s Jamal McDowell sparkled all season and reclaimed their spots as two of the hardest hitters in the Public League.

Raby wide Reciever Terry McDonald stars in basketball as well as football, but may want to rethink his options. McDonald is the first Raby player ever selected to the All-City team. He had 12 touchdown receptions and nearly 900 yards receiving.
