Richards may host the annual “Bobby Bolton Classic,” but Lincoln-Way East owns it.

The Griffins captured their sixth consecutive tournament title on Saturday, downing Richards 54-21.

For another season, the pressure is off.

“You don’t want to be that team that’s going to lose,” senior Meaghan McMahon said after scoring a game-high 15 points. “But we have good team chemistry. I knew we could do it.”

Other major contributors for Lincoln-Way East (3-1) were Marissa DeGroot (10 points, seven rebounds), Claire McMahon (eight points, five rebounds) and Haley McCabe (eight points).

Georgia Danos had 10 points and seven rebounds for Richards (2-1).

Lincoln-Way East went about its annual business in varying manner. Rather than attack the Bulldogs inside with their superior height, the Griffins stopped and popped from the outside more often than not in the first half.

It resulted in a pair of 3-pointers by Claire McMahon and one each from Meaghan McMahon and Dana O’Grady.

“We have a lot of shooters on this team and we just kind of go with the flow,” Meaghan McMahon said.

It was still close at 10-7 East when the Griffins closed out the first quarter with a 7-0 flurry, Meaghan McMahon and DeGroot sandwiching jumpers around a trey by Claire McMahon.

Richards went 11 consecutive possessions, well into the second period, before a driving layup by Danos got the Bulldogs made it a 20-9 proposition.

Ahead 27-13 at the half, East started the third quarter driving, DeGroot going back-to-back with a three-point play and a lay-in on an assist from Meaghan McMahon.

“When it’s open, it’s open,” DeGroot said. “We’ll knock it down wherever it’s at.”

Thornton 50, Curie 42: Thornton (2-1) prevailed in the third-place game as Lynda Tolbert had 15 points and Briana Anthony 12.

Reavis 39, Eisenhower 38: Reavis (2-1) claimed fifth place in a thriller behind 12 points by Donna Mierwa and eight from Katelyn LoRusso. Eisenhower (1-3) was led by Shavonne Lewis (18 points).
