Miles Simelton was not going to back down from the relentless pressure.
The Oswego senior guard drilled three three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points as the host Panthers stunned No. 4 Proviso East 68-59 in overtime in the Oswego/Naperville North Hoops for Healing tournament Wednesday night in Oswego.
It was the first regular-season loss for the defending Class 4A runner-up Pirates (2-1) in the last two years.
Darion Reddick scored a career-high 20 points for the Panthers (2-1). Simelton and Reddick buried back-to-back three-pointers that put Oswego up 61-57 with 1:17 remaining in overtime.
Oswego beat the Pirates at their own game, forcing Proviso East into an astounding 28 turnovers. They also outscored Proviso East by 15 points (27-12) on three-pointers. “Our coaches told us we had to be able to meet their speed,” Simelton said. “We were to get them out of position defensively and I was able to find our shooters.”
Simelton and Reddick scored 10 points apiece in the first half to stake the Panthers to a 32-26 lead at the break. “There were two ways to go with this game, either meet their speed or not, and we choose not to get away from how we like to play,” Oswego coach Kevin Schnable said.
“Miles was awesome against high quality kids and Reddick played the game of his life,” he said.
Danny Mangers added 10 points. His two three-pointers from the left baseline maintained the Panthers’ 49-45 lead entering the final quarter.
Simelton hit two three-pointers in the fourth, including a game-tying bomb from the left wing that forced overtime at 55-55.
Proviso East star senior forward Sterling Brown had a triple double to forget, scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds and an ungainly 10 turnovers. His flagrant foul and subsequent technical put the game out of reach. East also struggled at the line, making 11-of-20 free throws, including two misses that could have extended its lead to five points late in the fourth quarter.
Jevon Carter and Brandon Jenkins added 13 points each for the Pirates.
