The star

Chargers point guard Glynn Watson proved he is a star in the making, playing high quality basketball against a national powerhouse. The sophomore scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, all the while handling pressure from Mater Dei’s Division I quality guards.

The moment

St. Joseph’s Paul Turner (12 points) scored with 4:46 to play to pull the Chargers within four points. The Monarch’s Elijah Brown (28 points), the son of former Lakers coach Mike Brown, immediately responded with a three to retake control.

The breakdown

Brown, 6-8 junior Stanley Johnson (15 points, nine rebounds) and Jordan Strawberry (13 points), Darryl Strawberry’s son, were too much for the young Chargers (4-2), who showed flashes of brilliance but couldn’t maintain that level of play for 32 minutes against USA Today’s No. 11 ranked team.
