Junior Milik Yarbrough had 21 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks to lead host Zion-Benton past Libertyville 54-40 on Tuesday in a North Suburban Prairie contest.
“We’re happy with our start (to the season),” said Zion coach Don Kloth. “Anytime you win a conference game, you’re happy.’’
Zion-Benton (6-1, 2-0) trailed 11-2 in the opening minutes and was down 12-7 after a quarter. Libertyville’s zone held the Zee-Bees to 3-for-14 shooting from the field.
In the second quarter, Yarbrough had seven points as Zion took a 21-18 lead into intermission.
The Zee-Bees then broke the game open by finishing the third quarter on a 14-5 run, with Yarbrough scoring eight, including a thunderous one-handed, put-back slam.
That made it 39-29 after three quarters and Libertyville (0-1, 1-5) didn’t threaten the rest of the way.
Libertyville’s Matt Varner scored 12 points and Jack Deichl added eight.
For the game, the Cats shot 14-for-59 from the field and just 8-for-15 from the free-throw line.
Zion was 21-for-51 from the field.
“Libertyville got off to a really good start tonight,’’ Kloth said. ‘‘It was our first time against a zone defense,” the coach added. “As the game went on, we attacked it a lot better and Milik’s offensive rebounding was important.”
Zion moves way up in class for its next game, playing at unbeaten Lake Forest on Saturday night.
Libertyville is at Lake Zurich the same evening.
