Aarias Austin scored five points in the final 10 seconds as host Warren snuck past Stevenson 55-52 on Tuesday in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division boys basketball game.

It was the fifth straight win for the Blue Devils (6-2), while Stevenson has lost two in a row after starting out 4-0.

Austin’s heroics began after Stevenson took a 52-50 lead on a bucket by Connor Cashaw with 1:10 to play.

After a Warren miss and a Stevenson charging foul, Austin bombed home a three-pointer with nine seconds to go to give Warren the lead.

Then, after Stevenson sophomore guard Jalen Brunson (18 points) was called for a charging foul (Mitch Cygan took the charge on the blocks), Austin (11 points) hit two free throws with 2.5 seconds left to complete the scoring.

Brunson’s halfcourt shot at the buzzer drew iron but not net.

Austin’s heroics came after he was called for a technical foul with 2:51 to play for running over a Stevenson player after a timeout was called.

“Coach challenged me in the huddle when I got the technical foul,” Austin said. “I felt like I had to respond.”

“ I came off the screen (on the three-pointer). Mitch set a great screen, got a good look and was able to knock it down. I felt it was my fault we were down in the first place. I took a bad shot when we were up six and I picked up the technical foul.”

Adrian Deere led the Devils in scoring with 15 points. He was 6-of-8 from the field in the game, and hit two three-balls. James Betori a dded 11.

Warren hit 22-of-36 from the field in the game.

“Our kids executed tremendously on offense,” said Warren coach Ryan Webber. “And we had kids make some big-time shots when we had to. They deserve a lot of credit.

“We went to Lake Zurich on Friday and New Trier on Saturday, and had one day on the court to prepare for a really good Stevenson team.”

The Patriots were led in scoring by Cashaw with 21.

“We can’t get happy,” said Austin and have a layoff and then lose 2-3 in a row,” said Austin. “Coach has really harped on ‘How do we handle success?’ We have to come back Saturday against a good Mundelein team and battle like we have the last few games.”
