The final minutes of Friday’s contest between North Shore Country Day and Hope Academy were not pretty. The game-winning shot was.
Annie Kroll stepped up to the arc and drained a three-point shot with 20 seconds remaining to give the Raiders a 38-37 win over Hope Academy.
“I saw them in a 2-3 zone and I saw the top of the key open and that’s my best shot from around the three-point line so I just took it,” Kroll said. “As soon as it left my hand, I knew it was going in.”
Kroll’s shot restored some order after a wild couple of minutes on the center court at Attack Athletics. Sophomore guard Safia Vahra gave the Raiders a 35-33 lead with two minutes remaining, but were they failed to put the Eagles away, turning the ball over on the next two possessions.
Hope Academy’s Scout Muzikowski took advantage with a go-ahead three-pointer. After Alex Canning went one of two from the charity stripe to make it a two point game, Kroll came down the court and buried the game-winner.
“I was just telling the guys at the scorer’s table, ‘I think this is like a bowling match or something,’ because I felt like every time someone got the ball, they wanted to get rid of it so fast that the ball was on the ground more than I saw people making legitimate passes,” North Shore coach Dana Leonard said. “I was just happy that we were on the good side of the last turnover.”
Kroll finished with a game-high 20 points while sophomore forward Meghan Nolan added seven.
After trailing for nearly the entire first three quarters, the trio propelled a 7-2 run to put North Shore Country Day in the driver’s seat to kick off the fourth quarter.
Canning and Muzikowski each finished with 13 points for Hope Academy, and freshman guard Lanette Smith added 11.
