Lyons had a memorable start to the second quarter when it faced Downers North Friday night, and the Trojans would like to forget that the period ever happened.
After the teams were tied 11-11 following the opening eight minutes, Lyons began the second period on a 10-1 run and never looked back, claiming a 69-34 West Suburban Silver victory in LaGrange.
The Lions knocked down 8-of-11 (73 percent) of their shots in the stanza, while Downers Grove North (6-5, 1-3) missed seven straight to start the quarter and did not hit a field goal until just over a minute before halftime.
“We just need to get into things, getting into our offense and moving the ball,” said Lyons guard Jarryd Heath. “We were a little shaky on defense, too. But we got things set and we were ready to go.”
Chris O’Reilly led all scorers with 22 points, including five three-pointers. Sam Cybulski had 12 points off the bench and senior Jarryd Heath finished with 10.
Downers Grove North was led by Nick Norton’s 14 points and reserve Garrett Tierney added seven points. Tierney’s basket in the third quarter capped an 8-0 run for the Trojans, but they were only able to trim the lead to 41-26.
Lyons (4-4, 1-2) limited Downers North to just four points in the fourth quarter when the lead swelled to 35 points. Junior Jim Cullen scored five points in the final period for Lyons.
“We are always looking for better shots, trying to get our teammates open, and the best shot they can get,” Heath said.
