Apparently St. Patrick guard Royale Ewing and his teammates understood what they had to do better against Stagg Saturday night during the third-place game of the 2nd annual Hinsdale South Tournament.

Head coach Mike Bailey made it clear after the Shamrocks’ semifinal loss to Brother Rice the night before on what they had to do better, and that was scoring on easy opportunities on offense.

The offense, for the first three quarters, finally complemented a consistent defense and the Shamrocks were able to capture a 62-48 win. Ewing set the tone, scoring 14 points in the first half and rallying the Shamrocks (10-3) to a 39-23 lead at that point.

“I wanted to come out with a mindset of playing as hard I could,” said Ewing, who finished with 23 points and 5 rebounds. “I don’t think I did that yesterday and it something I’m going to keep in mind personally for myself for the rest of my life.”

Ahead 13-11 after a quarter, the Shamrocks went on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter and eventually outscored the Chargers (10-4) 26-12 in the period for the 13-point advantage. Ewing had 10 points in the quarter while teammate Elijah Watson had six, all points coming on a pair of three-point plays.

The Shamrocks scored the first seven points of the third to increase their lead to 46-23, and led by at least 12 the rest of the way. Ewing scored the first five points of the quarter.

Luis Gallego and Nicholas Coleman had 10 points each for the Shamrocks. Watson finished with nine points and eight assists.

“I thought we had a lot of character today,” said Bailey, whose team was held to 54 points in the semifinal but reached that mark against Stagg with 5-minutes, 42-seconds left in the fourth. “These types of games are character-type game. To come back against another good team after a tough loss shows character.”

Kevin White led the Chargers with 18 points while teammates Sean Dwyer added 14 and Max Strus had 10.
