La Grange, IL - Friday, January 11, 2013: Hinsdale Central's Brian Owens (1) drives to the basket vs Lyons Township's Harrison Niego (5). | Steve Johnston~for Sun-Times Media
Hinsdale Central senior point guard Brian Owens plays with a ton of emotion.
He wanted that trait to rub off on his teammates during Friday’s big West Suburban Conference Silver game against host Lyons. Owens had 16 points, six assists and two steals to lead the Red Devils to a 55-39 win.
“A lot of the guys haven’t played a true road game in conference,” Owens said. “This was our first tough opponent. I feel like I have to be a leader because I’ve been in the situation before. I just tried to bring energy to the team and give everyone some confidence.”
Being a leader was far from Owens’ only contribution.
He drained all five of his three-point attempts in the first half to give Hinsdale Central a comfortable 34-24 halftime advantage.
Hinsdale Central (8-5) improved to 4-1 in conference to remain in the title hunt along with Oak Park-River Forest and York.
The Red Devils connected on 21 of 38 shots (55 percent) from the field, including 8-for-13 on shots beyond the arc.
“Any win on the road, especially in this league is a good win to get,” Hinsdale Central coach Nick Latorre said. “I thought our shot selection was good. It was good that we hit some [three-point] shots early to stretch out the defense.”
Lyons (6-9) was led by Christopher O’Reilly (10 points).
