It didn’t take long for visiting West Aurora to take advantage of an undermanned and inexperienced Lockport team Saturday night.

When the first quarter ends with one player — Blackhawks guard Jayquan Lee — collecting more steals (4) than the amount of points by Lockport, it doesn’t bode well for the Porters.

West Aurora jumped to a 15-3 first quarter lead and never looked back during a 59-19 non-conference win.

Jontrell Walker led the Blackhawks (13-2) with 22 points while Lee added 10 points and five steals. Jeremy Miller had four points to lead Lockport.

The Porters (5-12), already struggling with their starters, were without two front-court players — six-foot-six Andrew Gosney and 6-6 David Robinson — and point guard Derrick Lockhart.

Gosney and leading scorer Robinson are sick and are expected to be back next week while Lockhart’s issues relate to school.

“I would have liked to see them with all of their guys and I feel bad for (Lockport coach) Larry (Thompson, Jr.),” West Aurora coach Gordon Kerkman said.

The two teams met a few weeks ago in the first round of the Pontiac Tournament with the Blackhawks winning 67-22.

Down 9-0, the Porters finally got on the board with 2:26 left in the first quarter on a three-pointer by Ryan Reed. The Blackhawks would follow that with another 9-0 run that ran through the first and midway into the second quarter for an 18-3 lead.

The half ended with the Blackhawks in control 23-7. Sloppy passes by the Porters accounted for most of their 13 turnovers at that point.

“My three starters missing played in the first game and the result was about the same,” Thompson, Jr. said. “The kids don’t understand what it takes to be competitive and when you play a great team like this you have to learn to get it to the hot hand. That’s been the issue so far. We don’t have the patience to realize what it takes to be good.”
