The Brooks boys basketball team lost to Carver at home 59-49 Thursday in a Red-South matchup, but the bigger story was the absence of its coach, Chris Head.
Head received a letter from the Board of Education Thursday notifying him that he was relieved of his coaching duties effective immediately. He was escorted by security from Brooks.
Head said there was no reason given for his dismissal and he was not aware of what prompted the action. He insists that he has the support of his coaches and players.
"I look forward to getting back with my kids," Head said. "This year has been as gratifying as I have had in my 28 years of coaching. I have enjoyed this challenge as much as I did when I won city and state titles."
Said assistant coach Joe Foster: "His absence had a major impact on the game. This came out of left field. So I can imagine how it effected the kids. We all are behind Chris and know this is just a big misunderstanding."
