Fenwick’s rapid-fire offense has done its share of wearing down opponents this season.

Barrington was another victim of the No. 10 Friars, which won 71-41 Saturday in the first game of the Sweet 16 tournament for each team in Barrington. The Fillies only scored 16 points in the second half and nearly went the entire fourth quarter without a field goal until Angie Kirchoff’s three-pointer at the buzzer ended the game.

The Fillies (13-10) trailed by 10 points at halftime, but withered under the constant full-court pressure and Fenwick’s eight three-pointers in 17 attempts. All five of Fenwick’s starters scored in the game, but that’s relative considering coach Dave Power used all 14 players on his roster and he constantly shuffled his lineup with mass substitutions of sometimes five players at a time.

The Friars (17-2) won their fifth consecutive game behind Jade Owen’s game-high 14 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Freshman Deja Cage added 13 points while Maggie Reilly had 11. Cage and Reilly had a team-leading three 3-pointers each. Even reserve guard MacKenzie Sewall, who doesn’t play in every game, had her first 3-pointer of the season in the fourth quarter.

“We’re trying to run up and down and knock in some 3s,” Owens said. “In the past couple of games, our threes have been falling more than usual.”

Barrington trailed 42-30 in the third quarter until the Friars went on a 12-point run to take control of the game. Fenwick outscored the Fillies 21-12 in the third quarter and 15-4 in the fourth quarter. Barrington missed all eight of its shots in the final quarter until Kirchoff’s three. The Fillies only previous point in the fourth came on a Katherine Sodeika free throw with 6:40 to go in the game.

Kirchoff led the Fillies with nine points. Aoife Callanan had seven points off the bench. Barrington shot 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

“We were shooting poorly. We made 13 of 51 from the floor and that is not effective shooting,” Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro said.

The Fillies’ poor shooting didn’t only occur in the second half. Barrington went 4 1/2 minutes in the first quarter with one basket as Fenwick turned the Fillies’ 4-0 lead into a 16-10 lead for the Friars.

“We got to jump on teams and not let them score so much,” Owens said. “It was a good (feeling).”
