Farragut ran off the first 13 points of the game and appeared to be on its way to an easy win over Rich East on Saturday in the Ronald "Chops" Billinger Jr. Memorial Shootout at Young. The Rockets recovered quickly, bouncing back with a 15-0 run and held on the rest of the way for a 79-77 win.
"I'm not sure who that team was that started the game," Rich East coach George Leonard said. "Farragut wasn't going to lay down. They are tough West Side kids and they'll keep coming at you."
Brandon Cole and Nick Harden entered the game for the Rockets (11-5) when the score was 13-0 and provided an instant spark.
Cole started the 15-0 run with a three-pointer with 3:34 left in the first and Harden tied it at 13-13 with a three.
They combined for 17 points in the first half in which the Rockets led 41-28. Cole had all 11 of his points in that first half while Harden had six of his nine.
Nick Horne, one of the players Leonard took out of the game in the first quarter, scored 14 of his 20 in the second half. Don Henderson scored 14 points for the Rockets while Russell Wright added 11. Ronald Lawton had 10 points and eight boards.
"I was missing shots I normally make," said Horne, who hit a key free throw with 6 seconds left to make it a two possession game. "Brandon came in and started hitting some threes. I'm glad my teammates stepped up and got us back in the game."
Joshua Adams finished with 25 points to lead the Admirals (9-8). Teammate Sire Carroll added 19 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 1:21 left and his team trailing 73-70. Ashawn Jones had 14 while Ernest Johnson chipped in 13.
The Admirals trailed 71-60 midway through the fourth but battled back , pulling within three points on three separate occasions before scoring the last basket of the game as time ran out.
"I'm still trying to figure out who this team is," Farragut coach William Nelson said. "I don't know if we took them for granted after running off the first 13 points but we sure played like it."
