The tone was set early in Saturday’s finale of the Third Annual Ernie Kivisto Shootout tripleheader between host East Aurora and Waukegan.
The Tomcats took a 2-0 lead on a Tyree Willis putback 44 seconds into the action but the visiting Bulldogs responded with 12 straight points over the next six minutes and never looked back on the way to a 75-48 rout.
“We came out of the gate and thought we'd be a pressure team but soon found out that’s not our forte,” said Waukegan coach Ron Ashlaw. “We made a philosophical change to go back to our roots and be good in the halfcourt defense. We put a ton of emphasis on stops, giving up no easy looks and no penetration and this is the culmination of that.”
‘This,’ translates to wins in nine of the Bulldogs’ last 12 games, boosting their record to 12-8.
Senior Davonte Taylor led the visitors with 18 points and 12 rebounds, 6-foot-6 junior Jerome Davis added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Jordan Johnson added 15 points.
Willis led the Tomcats, who fell to 3-18, with 22 points and six rebounds. Junior Jonathon Villezcas added 12 points and five rebounds while Fred Reynolds had a team-high nine boards.
East was out-rebounded 42-36 and turned the ball over 19 times.
