Nicholas Day recorded two goals and two assists while Ryan Maksimovic notched a goal with two helpers as No. 1 Glenbrook North defeated Stevenson 6-2 in boys hockey Saturday night at the Northbrook Ice Arena.
"We were moving the puck and all working well together," Day said. "The guys gave me some great passes."
But it was Stevenson (21-17-4) that looked like the state's best team in the opening period. The Patriots out-shot Glenbrook North 16-5 en route to a 2-1 lead. After the Spartans Seth Gideon (goal, assist) scored the game's first goal off a feed from Maksimovic. Stevenson had tallies from Michael Trapp and Jared Projansky on an assist from Trapp.
The score might have been worse for Glenbrook North, but goaltender Nathan Berger made several acrobatic stops.
"I let them stew about it awhile," Glenbrook North coach Evan Poulakidas said about the short break between the first and second periods. "They started to rethink what they were doing."
"We started out playing pretty well," Stevenson coach Jim Wood said. "But then we had a couple of breakdowns in our zone. They did a good job of moving the puck and their guys buried it."
Glenbrook North (41-10-3) got the game winner midway through the second period as Day found Maksimovic in front of the net for a one-timer and a 3-2 lead.
The Spartans also had goals from Jonathan Gauger and Christopher Zhang.
