Rich South senior guard Gelina Webb was well-rested going into the final period of Monday's game against visiting Shepard.
Not that she was happy about it.
"I've got to learn to stop fouling so early," said Webb, who sat nearly the entire fourth quarter with three fouls.
This time, it didn't matter. Webb made up for it with a 12-point explosion, leading the Rockets to a 60-53 victory.
Webb finished with 18 points, while Ashley Dennis contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds and Myriah Pair 10 points and 12 rebounds for Rich East (8-14).
Shepard (10-13) was paced by Jessica Chaput (12 points, 9 rebounds), Amanda Weiss (10 points, 6 assists) and Myrissah Mitchell (10 points).
The victory was the second in a row for the Rockets, who are trying to build a bit of momentum going into Class 3A playoffs.
“It’s very big for us,” Rich East coach Jonnie Bass said. “The thing is, we’re notorious about Monday night games. It’s just a demon on us. But in the second half we usually pick it up, which we did.”
The back and forth and very physical tussle saw neither team able to pull away. Shepard had its own foul issues, with Weiss (who just recently returned from an ankle injury) sitting portions of both the second and third quarters.
Tied at 35-all through three periods, Webb went to work, hitting a three-pointer and going 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
Her biggest contribution occurred with 1:04 remaining and the Rockets clinging to a 55-53 lead. Webb drove the lane, banked in a layup and was fouled. She completed the three-point play. She also scored their final two points with two charity tosses.
“At crunch time I have to step up,” Webb said. “When I step up, everybody steps up.”
