Stagg senior Revi McMahon had just one message for the small, but vocal Lincoln-Way North boys cheering section who verbally hounded her every time she touched the ball in Thursday's SouthWest Suburban Red title showdown:
"You don't phase me at all."
McMahon was smiling when she said it, and with good reason after leading the No. 9 Chargers to a 50-32 victory.
The 5-foot-5 guard was a force, scoring 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting. One of the misses came early, an air ball that immediately made her the favorite target for the North faithful.
Her response was to hit back-to-back three-pointers, allowing Stagg (20-5, 12-2) to build an 11-5 lead after one quarter.
As it would turn out, the chants never stopped, and neither did McMahon.
After North closed a 24-16 halftime deficit down to 26-24 on a 7-0 run in the third period, McMahon turned things back around with a driving layup, a pull-up three-pointer and another drive to the bucket for a three-point play.
"It made me play harder," McMahon said of the special attention. "Honestly, they were only motivating me.
"We were so pumped to play this game, right from the locker room when school ended. They're a great team, but we didn't want to lose."
If McMahon's third-quarter outburst re-established separation, Stagg senior Alexa Janus delivered a knockdown blow with back-to-back threes to close the period and put Stagg in front 40-29.
Janus, who finished with 11 points, was also fierce in getting after loose balls, recording three steals and forcing two other held balls.
"We just realized we needed to refocus and do what we do best," Janus said. "On those threes, my teammates in the background were saying, 'Shoot it. You've got it.' If they're saying it, they know best. You shoot it."
Casey McMahon was also key for Stagg, hitting a pair of threes. Ali Conrad kept North from dominating underneath, grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
The No. 8 Phoenix (22-5, 11-3) was paced by Ashley Weringa (nine points) and Valen Manns (seven points, six rebounds).
