The Montini wrestling team steamrolled its way through the Class 2A Antioch Sectional on Saturday, claiming nine championships and qualifying 13 wrestlers in all for the state meet.
Title winners for the perennial powerhouse were Tommy Paweleski (113 pounds), Vince Turk (120), Jordan Laster (126), Chris Garcia (138), Michael Sepke (145), Xavier Montalvo (160), Jake Turk (182), Anthony Ferraro (195) and Edgar Ruano (220). Also advancing to state were Jimmy Paweleski (106), Jose Champagne (132), Luke Fortuna (152) and Michael Maduko (170).
"When our team is dominating, it gives everyone else motivation to dominate, too," Garcia said. "We wanted to use this sectional to make a statement to the rest of the state that we'll be ready for [state] next week."
Carmel qualified four team members, led by champion Jake Cochrane (285), Brodie Palm (106), Jake Morgan (120) and Jimmy Dandino (160) also moved on.
Vernon Hills' Jordan Reich (106) earned a title, and teammate David Pierce (145) also advanced.
"We were hoping to get David through, and Jordan was a champion, so I'm really happy," said Vernon Hills coach Jerry Micelli.
Fenwick's Tony Triggiano (152), Mike Kozyra (160) and Dubem Ikedionwu (170) each made the cut as well, as did Elmwood Park's Ben Vazquez (113) and Ridgewood's Sam Karim (145).
