First it was Barrington’s stifling defense that dug a hole for South Elgin on Tuesday. Then it was a third quarter offensive explosion by the host Broncos that buried the Storm and handed them their eighth straight defeat, 64-45, in a non-conference meeting.

In the second quarter South Elgin was held scoreless until the final minute as the Broncos built a 24-12 advantage. Matt Smith’s three-pointer just before the half was the Storm’s only basket of the quarter.

“It was just good overall team defense,” said Barrington coach Bryan Tucker. “Nothing fancy. Just a straight-up vanilla man-to-man half-court defense. The kids just did a great job of staying in front of their man and getting in the gaps to help on the weak side.”

Barrington (15-11) then exploded for 29 points in third quarter to open a 53-35 lead. The Broncos shot a blistering 13-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-6 from the three-point arc, in the quarter.

“The way we played defense in the first half gave us a lot a confidence and that carried over to the offensive side in the second half,” said Tucker. “We got into a real comfort zone with our shooting. We did a good job of moving off the screens.”

Barrington guard Brad Zaumseil celebrated senior night with a team-high 21 points, including 10 in the third quarter. Zaumseil just went over the 1,000 career point mark last Friday.

“He’s been there for us all year,” said Tucker. “What a great way for him to finish here at home. I’m happy for all of our seniors. They have done a great job and have been a tribute to our program.”

The bright side for the Storm (5-20) was that their freshmen accounted for 33 of their 45 points. Smith had a team-high 16 and fellow freshman Justin Howard added 12 points.

“It might seem like we are frustrated at times,” said South Elgin coach Chaz Taft. “We can’t let that happen. We are a young team. We are going to keep teaching them and work on the fundamentals. We can’t worry too much about the scores and things like that right now. We just have to keep working on getting better and learning from every game.”
