Hillcrest guard Kyle Oden helped his team break open a close game with T.F. South Friday, leading the visiting Hawks to a 62-48 win in the South Suburban Blue.
Oden, a 5-10 senior, scored six points during a 17-4 run in the third quarter to put the Hawks ahead 47-31. Hillcrest (19-6, 5-0) led the T.F. South (10-14, 1-4) 30-27 at halftime.
“We turned up the energy a lot,” Oden said. “We came out kind of flat, so we knew we had to turn it up.”
The Hawks forced seven turnovers in the third quarter and allowed the Rebels only eight shots in the period.
“We played with a little bit more intensity,” Hawks’ Coach Don Houston said. “Defensively, we were nonchalant in the first half. We gave up a lot of easy baskets.”
Oden (12 points) was one of four Hillcrest starters in double figures. Taylor Adway had 12 points. Jovan Mooring added 15 points. Devin Harrison scored 14 points.
“That’s good balance and that will help us down the line,” Houston said. “Kyle is getting to the basket pretty well now, and he is getting the ball to the open man when people start to help out on him.”
