Plano took advantage of several missed free-throw attempts by Coal City and made 5-of-7 free-throws of its own over the final 53 seconds of overtime to out-duel the host Coalers 55-52 in Interstate Eight conference play Friday night.
“It was a fun game,” Plano coach Brett Moore said. “A couple of bang-bang plays at the end but we ended up on top at the end and got the win and won the conference.”
Junior guard Elijah Wallace led Plano (20-9, 10-1) with 14 points on 6-of-21 shooting (2-of-6 from three) while teammate Udo Agomo added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Jon West led the Coalers with a game-high 19 points while teammates Nick Peters and Joe Micetich added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Wallace’s put-back basket tied the game at 46-46 with 1:15 left in regulation. Coal City’s Brennen Shetina made a jumper with 8.4 seconds left but was called for an offensive foul and the basket was waived.
In overtime, a Wallace jumper followed by an Agomo put-back basket gave the Reapers a 50-46 lead with 1:30 remaining.
Coal City (16-12, 6-5) was able to cut the deficit to 52-49 on a Micetich bucket with 23.9 seconds left but Agomo connected on 3-of-4 from the foul line in the final seconds to seal the victory.
“I just blocked out everything and did what I do in practice,” Agomo said of his free throws.
“We just didn’t execute the way we would have liked at the end of regulation and in overtime,” Coal City coach Brad Boresi said.
