Apparently Tilden senior Allen Potts has watched a hockey game or two.

During the fourth quarter of the Blue Devils Class 2A Illiana Christian sectional semifinal against U-High, Potts took an elbow to the top of his left eye from Maroons 6-foot-5 center Maxwell Rothschild.

He went down immediately and blood could be seen from the stands. At the time, his team was up by 12 with 3:24 left in the contest. The Maroons went on a 5-0 run and appeared to gain some confidence from the injury. Potts got bandaged up and came back into the game, scored a basket and lifted his team to a 55-44 win.

“I think I’m going to need a couple stitches,” said Potts, who finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. “No. 33 (Rothschild) did it intentionally. No doubt about it. I wanted to come back in.

“We lost last year in sectionals and I really want it this year.”

The Blue Devils (14-12) will meet Seton, a two-point winner over Hales, for the sectional title on Friday at 7 pm. The Maroons finish at 21-8.

Korey Myers added 12 points for the winners, while Rothschild had a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Maroons. Teammate Kyle Parker added 10.

The Maroons led 8-6 after a quarter of play but fell behind for good at the half 22-17. The Blue Devils led by at least five points the entire third quarter and held at least a five point lead in the fourth. Up 50-43, the Blue Devils ended the game with a 5-1 run.

“He’s a tough warrior,” said Tilden coach Cyrus McGinnis of Potts. “He’s a senior and he played tough tonight. He’s just a hard-nosed player. Can’t say enough about him. He’s been our double-double man all year in scoring and rebounds.

“I’ve never seen Seton until tonight. They have a good team and we look forward to the challenge Friday night against them. We’re going to play hard.”
