Two weeks after a game on the South Side was canceled amid controversy, Payton showed up in Roseland and played host Brooks in a non-conference game that went off without a hitch.

Last week wasn't an easy one for defending state champions. The winners of three of the four biggest classes were in action in the second round of the playoffs. Two barely survived and one suffered a heartbreaking defeat.
Cleveland Clark scored two touchdowns, including a 17-yard run with just under a minute remaining, as Brooks stunned previously unbeaten Harper 27-19 in a clash of conference unbeatens Saturday night at Gately Stadium.
Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw was 6-for-9 for 175 yards and two touchdowns and Josh Smith had eight carries for 121 yards and a touchdown and forced a fumble as Brooks rolled to a 65-8 win over Carver Friday at Gately.
Behind the running back tandem of Cleveland Clark and Josh Smith, Brooks rolled past Marshall for a 51-24 Illini Heartland win Saturday afternoon at Gately Stadium.
