If teachers go on strike, Chicago Public Schools officials want the games to continue. CPS announced on Thursday that the state's largest school district has asked the Illinois High School Association to waive its rule prohibiting sports teams from practicing and playing during a strike.

The date circled on so many calendars isn’t the season opener or the state championship but Sept. 4 — the first day of classes for most Chicago Public Schools. That also might be when teachers go on strike if their union and the Board of Education can’t agree on a new contract.
