Fresh off conference titles and Top 16 state showings in 2012, Neuqua Valley, Benet and Naperville Central headline a loaded field of Naperville and Aurora tennis teams eager for another strong run on the courts this spring.
Neuqua Valley scored four goals during an 11-minute span of the second half en route to a 5-0 win over invite host Downers South Saturday. Neuqua Valley claimed the Downers South Invitational title with a 3-0 record.
Neuqua Valley pitcher David Gerber, who went 8-1 with a 1.21 in 2012, is poised for a huge senior campaign. Next season, he'll join his older brother Mike at Creighton.
Neuqua Valley finished 1-2 in the 1,600 and 3,200, and also won the 1,600 relay to fuel its second-place finish in the Upstate Eight indoor conference meet at Batavia on Saturday.
Sean O’Mara scored 26 points, and Benet pulled away from Neuqua Valley in double overtime for a 68-62 victory Thursday. The Redwings will face West Aurora for the sectional title Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Despite winning 30 games last season, Neuqua Valley didn't meet its goal of making a trip to the state finals in Joliet. The Wildcats bring back some of their top players to help achieve that goal in 2013.
Neuqua Valley is ready to face its biggest challenge to date — Benet. The Wildcats will meet the Redwings Thursday in semifinal action at the Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional.
