In a game dictated by two solid offenses, Metea Valley emerged with the 8-7 win over West Aurora on a bloop single by Alise Perna in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal at Metea Valley Monday.
Metea Valley won its last four series in the Upstate Eight Valley and the Mustangs’ conference progress continued Monday with a 10-0, five-inning win over East Aurora in the Class 4A Oswego Regional quarterfinals.
West Aurora has been a streaky baseball team this year, starting the season 6-0 before losing 16 of 17 and winning seven straight. The Blackhawks began the playoffs Monday by beating Marmion 3-1.

West Aurora's Emma Spagnola is committed to Northern Illinois for softball, but Saturday in Charleston, she made a statement in track by personally accounted for 26 team points in by winning the long jump (18-9) and setting personal records in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Led by junior Peyton Wade, who had a hand in three first-place finishes for Aurora Christian in the Class 1A finals at Eastern Illinois University, the Eagles scored 52 points and finished third behind team champ Moweaqua Central A&M (60).
Geneva surprised everyone, including themselves, Friday night at the Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional. The Vikings came away with seven state berths and won the sectional title for the first time since 2010 with 103 points to Schaumburg's 88.
Freshman Paige Filipek scored on a rebound with 32:14 to play as Waubonsie Valley defeated Metea Valley 1-0 Friday to win the Class 3A Metea Valley Regional championship.

When West Aurora's Emma Spagnola was asked what she wanted to do Saturday shortly after qualifying for the finals in her second hurdles race at the state meet, she didn't hesitate to say she wants to win them both.
Plainfield Central wrapped up its first conference title since 2009 with a 4-0 shutout of Oswego Thursday afternoon. Winning pitcher Kaleigh Nagle struck out five and drove in an RBI.
Stevenson's Willie Bourbon is a rare three-sport athlete. Through talent and hard work, the sophomore hasn't been forced to narrow his focus and doesn't look to be doing so any time soon.

The Public League has shifted its premier event, the boys basketball tournament, all over the city the last few years. With a potential brand-new arena near McCormick Place, the Public League might finally have a place to call home.
